
Chikumeido (竹茗堂) Chasen
Usucha/Koicha, Purple Bamboo
Handcrafted by Kubo Sabun (久保左文) of Chikumeido (竹茗堂), this artisanal kurotake (黒竹- purple bamboo) chasen (濃茶 - thick matcha) and usucha (薄茶 - thin matcha). The shin (真 - formal) shape is characterized by its narrow handle and more elegantly curved tines.
matcha whisk) is suitable for both koicha (Chikumeido is headed by Kubo Sabun, a 24th generation chasen maker who continues his family's 500 year old tradition and is one of only a dozen remaining chasen masters. These whisks are made from locally grown bamboo in Japan's sole chasen making village, Takayama (高山), located in the northwest Nara prefecture.
Having ~70 finely shaped tines, this chasen sits between dedicated koicha chasen which have fewer but thicker tines, and dedicated usucha chasen, which have more but thinner tines.

CARE & MAINTENANCE
We recommend following our Chasen Care Guide to keep your chasen in optimal condition. Tips include:
- Cleaning the chasen after each use by rinsing with water
- Storing the chasen tips-down and in open air on a chasen tate (茶筅立て - whisk stand) to keep its shape and completely dry
